Astudy of the genomes of people and chimpanzees has yielded a deep insight into the origin of language, one of the most distinctive human attributes and a critical step in human evolution.

The analysis indicates that language, on the evolutionary time scale, is a very recent development, having evolved only in the last 100,000 years or so.

The finding supports a novel theory advanced by Dr. Richard Klein, an archaeologist at Stanford University, who argues that the emergence of behaviorally modern humans about 50,000 years ago was set off by a major genetic change, most probably the acquisition of language.

The new study, by Dr. Svante Paabo and colleagues at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, is based on last year's discovery of the first human gene involved specifically in language.

The gene came to light through studies of a large London family, well known to linguists, 14 of whose 29 members are incapable of articulate speech but are otherwise mostly normal. A team of molecular biologists led by Dr. Anthony P. Monaco of the University of Oxford last year identified the gene that was causing the family's problems. Known as FOXP2, the gene is known to switch on other genes during the development of the brain, but its presumed role in setting up the neural circuitry of language is not understood.

Dr. Paabo's team has studied the evolutionary history of the FOXP2 gene by decoding the sequence of DNA letters in the versions of the gene possessed by mice, chimpanzees and other primates, and people.

In a report being published online today by the journal Nature, Dr. Paabo says the FOXP2 gene has remained largely unaltered during the evolution of mammals, but suddenly changed in humans after the hominid line had split off from the chimpanzee line of descent.

The changes in the human gene affect the structure of the protein it specifies at two sites, Dr. Paabo's team reports. One of them slightly alters the protein's shape; the other gives it a new role in the signaling circuitry of human cells.

The changes indicate that the gene has been under strong evolutionary pressure in humans. Also, the human form of the gene, with its two changes, seems to have become universal in the human population, suggesting that it conferred some overwhelming benefit.

Dr. Paabo contends that humans must already have possessed some rudimentary form of language before the FOXP2 gene gained its two mutations. By conferring the ability for rapid articulation, the improved gene may have swept through the population, providing the finishing touch to the acquisition of language.

"Maybe this gene provided the last perfection of language, making it totally modern," Dr. Paabo said.

The affected members of the London family in which the defective version of FOXP2 was discovered do possess a form of language. Their principal defect seems to lie in a lack of fine control over the muscles of the throat and mouth, needed for rapid speech. But in tests they find written answers as hard as verbal ones, suggesting that the defective gene causes conceptual problems as well as ones of muscular control.

The human genome is constantly accumulating DNA changes through random mutation, though they seldom affect the actual structure of genes. When a new gene sweeps through the population, the genome's background diversity at that point is much reduced for a time, since everyone possesses the same stretch of DNA that came with the new gene. By measuring this reduced diversity and other features of a must-have gene, Dr. Paabo has estimated the age of the human version of FOXP2 as being less than 120,000 years.

Dr. Paabo says this date fits with the theory advanced by Dr. Klein to account for the sudden appearance of novel behaviors 50,000 years ago, including art, ornamentation and long distance trade. Human remains from this period are physically indistinguishable from those of 100,000 years ago, leading Dr. Klein to propose that some genetically based cognitive change must have prompted the new behaviors. The only change of sufficient magnitude, in his view, is acquisition of language.

I want to note this since it is the first time I think that Ive said this tho have thought it often

This was a post to HML responding to a member lamenting that magickal groups always seem to implode/fall appart/attract politics and fanatics etc-

the question was 'why is this always the story?' (of occult orders/gropup)

IMHO it is because 'the story' is about the flow of energy, not the fragile
people channeling it- the flow is doing just fine IMHO- I suppose from our
'solid' pov it is a whirl of chaos and bruised egos and politics and so on-
but I think the lotus unfolds as it is meant to and Im not too upset by any
of this silliness-
Any real ossification leads to shattering- any org or circle that is really
flowing walks a tightrope that can teter and spin out with ego crap any
time- and will if everyone is not crystal clear- and no one is always like
that- so- so it goes
At 53 I have been in several very potent circles/groups/zonules/covens etc
etc and seen each one come together and dissolve
The pain comes from attaching- and from losing a few good friends along the
way- but really, the Currents don't care :)
In retrospect, it seems that the least structure = the longest lifespan- the
HML is quite alive 30 years later, though individual 'cells' have come and
gone- We are ALL 'passing through the tuat' (of Nu) right here and now.
No worries.

What a fucking week-
Ear infection, politics at my sons group home- a b-day spent sleeping and tons of love and niceness- such a vortex
Then I had this amazing HML dream- who can say what it means but any comments welcome-

In in a huge city, NY? Like so- vibrant, partying - then a devastation (a bit of a bad 2012 movie we watched last night) but this was deeper
It was all the insane violence and whatnot- I looked across the River...
At the skyline...waiting for some sort of eruption of force that I was involved in
Maybe even I went 'bwahahaha!'...or like that
And suddenly in a huge window overlooking the grey and story sea a vast red image appeared, a yoni scarlet and billowing
In it appeared a flicker than full flame of deepest black
And this vulva/HML symbol blasted/bathed the whole city world reality with a rippling shakti transforming energy and I woke up.

Forrest had a bit of a rough weekend- he was aggressive with staff on Sat. and on Sunday.
Both times I sat with him at Fircrest and used the letter board to work out what was going on.
The new TV and controls were a catalyst but not an excuse
In conversation our conversations were like this:

- so- being a sucker I took him home and we had a wonderful day, though he was a bit chastened.
Im sure this is not ended, but that fact that I can now reason with him and communicate about these attacks is huge, he is able to reason and communicate as all the staff present (4) can attest.

Later I decided that I needed to do an RPM lesson at home on Emotions, a difficult issue for autistic people. I used a poster I use in ESL work that has pictures of faces and a lot of emotion words. Basically I referenced each word and went over them, many he knew (HAPPY etc) and others I wasn’t sure whether he knew or not. This is highlights of 2 session, I have one more set to do.

Back in the early 1980sI attended a talk at Cornell by a visiting
physicist. He spoke of Feynman diagrams

I was immersed in Nema's work at the time, so when the guy (I forget
his name) told the audience that Feynman diagrams are symmetrical in
time, I was quite startled. At the end of the lecture, I asked him
for clarification. I asked him point-blank is he was stating that
the future can determine the past in the same way that the past
normally determines the present..

He said that "we physicists" don't like to phrase things that way,
however your conjecture is perfectly true in the quantum realm. Not
really applicable to chemical reactions or most of the world as we
know it. Then he grinned at me, and said "some people of a more
metaphysical bent than me might feel that 'grace' is information from
our future selves to give us the ability to make wiser choices in the
present moment. Now, I am not saying that grace is or is not real,
nor do I have any experimental evidence of my previous statement. But
I do know physicists more metaphysical than I who do conjecture this."

Forrest is making huge breakthroughs and I guess Id better note it down somewhere so here it is.

An astounding group meeting (his 'wrap around') and for the first time, with the letter board and pointing, he was able to directly have a conversation with the psychiatrist- first time EVER.
He blew her- and me- and everyone away- it was a religious moment.
I asked him- 'do you have a question?'
He asked the doctor
AM I CRAZY?
She then spoke directly to him at length about "what does that mean?" and that no, he wasnt, he was autistic, a communication disorder and then she explained about his neurons, how the meds he is on are healing the ability of the neurons to fire and on and on= he listened to it all. Then asked:
WILL I GET BETTER?
Again the doctor, and us, told him that yes- he was- but she stressed that he would not become another person but woul be better able to be who he IS. The he typed:
I AM GETTING BETTER.
And we agreed.
Much more happened- but those were some of the AHA's He ended with:
I WANT TO THANK YOU DOCTOR.

Today an old friend, the mother of another severely autistic kid non verbal kid (Andy) who used to live with Forrest came over. He is having trouble and I wanted to show her about RPM and see what Forrest would make of the visit.
They ended up having a real sit-down chat- again, first ever- she was slack-jawed and teared up. So were we.
He is a sweet guy- we are getting to know our kid for the first time- some of the things he said:

When asked if he remembered who she was:
HER NAME IS ELIZABETH.
We reminded him about Andy and asked if he had any questions to ask:
WHERE IS ANDY?
He is at another group home.
WHY ISNT HE AT FIRCREST?
She explained why - then
CAN ANDY COME TO VISIT?
Shocked, she said sure- then
ANDY IS INVITED TO COME TO MY HOME!
There was more but Ive lost it.

I am so amazed at his fortitude. Every word is so hard for him to poke on the board- what a guy!

Today we went to see PONYA the new Miyazaki anime playing at a theater near us- second movie we have taken him to is over a year- he did great (messy with the popcorn) and it was, of course, brilliant because Miyazaki is a Kami-Sama!

And his school pics arrived- first time ever that he looks clear- Thank you Goddess! :)

The Pan book is almost there- and Ive let go of it waiting to hear if the seedling will have a home.
The Shinto book is surprisingly in edit stage and almost out the door.
Now, I have to approach the Tantrika book
It hovers astrally about me- 'write me bitch!!!' but Im busy

OK, in meditation I see a path- it is the central Pan- it is the Middle Pillar

hot spring dream

Maybe it was the book I was reading- the Ankara Museum book- who knows.

In the dream (vivid color) I am part of a vast primitive but sophisticated culture.
Lost of dreams of collumned temples and hot springs.

At the end, with others, I end up at this vast temple complex and suddenly realize that from above all the hills and rills leading to a sheer clipp over the ocean are formed into the shape of a vast mastadon- the 'tusks' (long hills) sweep to the edge and encompass 3 small hot spring pools on the edge of the cliff. All is covered in gradd and moss- beautiful. I, Rebecca and another all run down through the stone henges and walls and jump into the turquoise springs- ahhhh! and I awoke smiling.

Here we are in Pemukkele- first in the sacred pool - with the ruins- and at the hot spring at our hotel

A friend of mine in Japan started it...he is doing a wild basement horror house in downtown Tokyo focused on cannibalism- of course the Japanese are loving this shit....so a few more evil babies seemed to creep out...tis the season
Ghods I LOVE Halloween....and Sophia even moreso...day of the dead has LANDED at our house, now I have to get the tombstones and ther giant spider out...

I hve been back over a week from Turkey and have not noted what my 11* rite was
Because we were doing heavy traveling and exploring, up at 6am most days etc I was not sure what or when to do 11*
The it all fell into place (of course)
One of the things we could elect to do was see some Sufis dance.
On one hand it was clearly for tourists, on the other they were real Sufis (we visited the mosque and grave of the founder of all Sufi sects in Konye earlier that day) and it was near Konye- we figured, WTF
It was held in a circular space carved our of the stone- in Cappadocia - and it had 7 pollars,,,but 8 clusters of lights.
It was taken all seriously- we were told exactly what to do and not do (no pics and no applause- 'this is not a show!'
It was utterly stunning. The music elevated the room into the stars- the dancers spent much time honoring the ancestors and invoking the divine and lighting the place up with prana- then they danced.
I will post a scan of part of their explanation- it is all about revolving

So I sat utterly entranced and danced along- I did the whole 11* then and there - my chants- opening the gate to the moonbase

It was utterly delightful
I bow to the absolute in all religions/faiths/creeds
It is all onenone-
Like a galaxy

In the moonbase I saw us all as described- one vast orbiting constellation (star&system)

For days later the 8-spoked wheel haunted me...In ruins, in Hagia Sophia, Greek, Roman, Hittite...exactly the same.

The jewel in the lotus is the wheel of fortune :)

Since Ive been back...

So weird coming back to this country. Both of us have the strongest urge to live abroad again- sigh-
our son and other responsibilities forbid it- ah well. Just get me the fuck out of this (lovely) country at least once a year and Ill survive :)

But our country- as ken burns is showing- is miraculous as well...it is that virulent WASP/JudeoXianHyperCapitalismmememe culture that is so...bitter....and addictive.

So- back into the wizz-bang of my life- Forrest has a few rough days but is recovering- Mom & Dad can not be arround all the time (nor forever) My teaching does not start up again for over a week- time to get that cold Ive been supressing (Thanks bus-mate we nick named 'typhoid mary'), cleaning my office and seek a publisher for my Pan book.

Biggest news: My Shinto book will be published by Immanion Press, thanks for the thumbs-up Taylor Ellwood!!!

I had a dream: Intense, colorful, focused for a long time on a silver child, a small girl with suns for eyes, a toddler floating in pure space...she indicated a silver dagger (we have at home) and I picked it up, cutting myself...or was it her?...by accident- just a bit.
She smiled and told me- 'dont waste it!' and I charged the blade to HER and she laughed
and I waoke- and knew: Artemis Pangaia, the Goddess of Asia Minor, the Goddess of Ephesus.

In Turkey she whispered to me non-stop, her face was everywhere, at Epesus she told both of us: Remember!
And we did. Every time we turned, there she was- Hittite Hubaba, Greek Artemis, Gordian???, Roman Dea, Fortuna, Diana...Central Anatolia ; the Lady of Arrina...at Perge the inscription: Artemis Pangaia
Indeed.

I have an invocation she gave me- I will post later. had a rare moment.

From Turkey- wow, amazing.
Fried at the moment and jet laggeg beyond fucking belief.
It never used to be this bad...getting old...
I will do a serious blow by blow ...but it was astounding - religious- unexpected and we saw more than I ever thought we would- highly recommended
